Peer feedback can make learning more effective when students give clear and specific comments. It offers another view of a piece of work and creates a chance to discuss how that work can improve.

First, a partner may notice a problem that the writer has missed. In a class project, I thought my explanation of a chart was clear. My partner asked what the percentages referred to. I then added the sample size and explained the comparison. The comment helped me understand why readers needed more information.

Giving feedback can also improve the reviewer’s thinking. When students explain why an example is weak, they must consider what makes an argument convincing. However, general comments such as “make it better” provide little direction. A shared checklist can help students focus on evidence, structure and clarity.

For these reasons, peer feedback is most useful as part of a process of review and revision. Students need time to read carefully, explain their suggestions and decide how to respond. The value comes from thoughtful discussion followed by concrete changes.
